The Godfather of Fitness Jack La Lanne has died at age 96

I thought he would live forever.  Jack La Lanne has died ata his California Home due to complications of pneumonia at the age of 96; 1/23/2011.   I remember sitting under my mother's ironing board while she ironed and worked out when I was a kid.

From the NNDB Site (taken in it's entirety):

Jack La Lanne was a juvenile delinquent, once attacking his brother with an axe, and setting his family's house on fire. In adulthood, he blamed his youthful misbehavior on being fed too many high-sugar foods. At 15, his mother dragged him to hear a speech by nutritionist Paul Bragg. Inspired, La Lanne reformed his eating habits, eliminating everything made with white flour or white sugar, and instead ate almost nothing but fruits, vegetables, and fish for the rest of his life. Healthy foods were hard to find, so La Lanne concocted his own recipes, and by the age of 18 he owned a health-food bakery.

At 21, he opened his first gym in Oakland, California. It was 1936, and most doctors at the time warned against working out with weights, believing it could cause a heart attack or ruin a man's sex drive. Considered a crackpot at the time, La Lanne eventually became America's foremost authority on fitness. His gym grew into a chain of fitness clubs, with no reports of members dying or losing interest in sex. To add variety to his customers' workouts, he devised such now-standard equipment as leg-extension machines and weights on pulleys for lifting. Over subsequent years, La Lanne was among the first to produce protein supplements and nutrition bars.

Beginning in 1951, La Lanne hosted and produced The Jack La Lanne Show, TV's first workout program. On his show, he performed calisthenics, usually with only a chair or table ledge as 'equipment', while cheerfully pointing at the camera and urging his audience to "Get up, work out, and feel better". At first, the show aired only in San Francisco, and La Lanne had to buy the air time, as TV executives were sure nobody would want to watch him do exercises. Within a few years, the program was nationally syndicated on ABC, where millions watched La Lanne do exercises until 1985.  (Including my mother and the neighbors.)  PS -- Remember the dog????

After his TV show ended, La Lanne remained in the public eye with a series of fitness stunts, usually performed on his birthday. In 1955, he swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco, while wearing handcuffs. In 1991, for his 70th birthday, he swam a mile while shackled to 70 boats carrying 70 people. Now in his 90s, La Lanne is still in excellent health, and works out two hours every day -- an hour in the gym, and an hour in the pool. He says he has not missed a day of workouts -- or had a sugary dessert -- since 1930. He still appears on television, selling his Jack La Lanne Power Juicers. "I don't care how old I live", he says, "I just want to be living while I am living!" In a 2004 interview, at the age of 90, he said he has "an active sex life".

La Lanne's Birthday Feats (As reported on Jack LaLanne's website)

1954 (age 40): swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, underwater, with 140 pounds (64 kg; 10 st) of equipment, including two air tanks. A world record.

1955 (age 41): swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco while handcuffed. When interviewed afterwards he was quoted as saying that the worst thing about the ordeal was being handcuffed, which reduced his chance to Star Jump significantly.

1956 (age 42): set a world record of 1,033 push-ups in 23 minutes on You Asked For It,[28] a television program with Art Baker.

1957 (age 43): swam the Golden Gate channel while towing a 2,500-pound (1,100 kg; 180 st) cabin cruiser. The swift ocean currents turned this one-mile (1.6 km) swim into a swimming distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km).

1958 (age 44): maneuvered a paddleboard nonstop from Farallon Islands to the San Francisco shore. The 30-mile (48 km) trip took 9.5 hours.

1959 (age 45): did 1,000 star jumps and 1,000 chin-ups in 1 hour, 22 minutes and The Jack LaLanne Show went nationwide.

1974 (age 60): For the second time, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf. Again, he was handcuffed, but this time he was also shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.

1975 (age 61): Repeating his performance of 21 years earlier, he again swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge, underwater and handcuffed, but this time he was shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.

1976 (age 62): To commemorate the "Spirit of '76", United States Bicentennial, he swam one mile (1.6 km) in Long Beach Harbor. He was handcuffed and shackled, and he towed 13 boats (representing the 13 original colonies) containing 76 people.[29]

1979 (age 65): towed 65 boats in Lake Ashinoko, near Tokyo, Japan. He was handcuffed and shackled, and the boats were filled with 6,500 pounds (2,900 kg; 460 st) of Louisiana Pacific wood pulp.[19]

1980 (age 66): towed 10 boats in North Miami, Florida. The boats carried 77 people, and he towed them for over one mile (1.6 km) in less than one hour.

1984 (age 70): Handcuffed, shackled and fighting strong winds and currents, towed 70 rowboats, one with several guests, from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary, 1 mile.[30]

High Waist Jeans ... Look Great and Keep Your Dignity When Bending : )

Women's high rise blue jeans are a great fashion look.  From Farah Faucet and Charlie's Angels who wore the high-rise, wide-leg jeans in the late '70s  to old Hollywood of the 30's, 40's and 50's who also rocked the look.

In Hollywood, jeans for women were made popular by the stars of the time.  There was the athletic and self-assured Katherine Hepburn (who wore them off-screen) and  Marilyn Munroe (who wore them on).   Debbie Reynolds also did her part in "Tammy."  Not to mention the motorcycle culture of the early 50s who also helped to make them fashionable.  Think of Marlon Brando "On the Waterfront."

If you are looking for a great look check out Grace Kelly as "Lisa" in the movie "Rear Window."  Kelly wears a fabulous pair of  slim indigo denim jeans with turned up, calf length cuffs (also known as pedal-pushers) and a high waist.  Coupled with a man’s button down shirt (fashionable in the 1950s) and the feiminine flourish of a sash. And alas, a pair of dark brown loafers in pintucked leather with wedge heel to seal the deal. (info found at Clothes on Film. and pictures were sourced from the Grace Kelly thread at The Fashion Spot.)

Perfect for the pinup or fifties look,  high rise jeans cinch the narrowest part of your torso and play up your curves. This makes them a natural for the curvy women who want to accentuate what she's got, along with the more boyish figures who want to create the illusion of an hour-glass figure.

At Get Go Retro we have these really adorable late 1940's inspired dungarees by  Nicole Katherine Designs. Made from USA denim! Beautifully handcrafted with a vintage looking side metal zipper. High waisted and slightly wide legs. Wear them cuffed with saddle shoes, penny loafers, heels or wedges. It's a perfect way to keep your sexy pin-up look in the colder months.  (We sell the saddle shoes too.)

High waisted jeans – particularly wide and trouser cuts in dark washes – are a perfect fit for the office. You can look professional by pairing your jeans with a tucked-in white shirt and a cropped jacket. Throw on a few bracelets, a thick belt with dress shoes and it's a go. Here's a tip: wear a shirt with a built-in bodysuit so it stays tucked in.
Prefer overalls?  We have them too ...Straight legs; dark denim with white button closure in the front, straps button in place in the back. Back patch pockets and a patch pocket on the front flap.

Another plus for high waisted jeans ... you can actually bend over and keep your dignity : )

Hair It Is .... Portland Oregon Hair Transplants

"Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb," made actor Edd Byrnes who carried a comb and was always combing his hair in the television series "Route 66" a star.  A perfect example of how, movies, media and peer pressure affect how we look at hair and how we value it.

Ever  worry that you are losing your hair?  Especially when you see large gobs of it in your hair brush;  in the shower, or perhaps on your pillow?

There has been many a worried woman and/or man who has questioned if they are losing to much hair.  Take into consideration the facts:  The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 3 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month during this phase, and 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time.  The other 10 percent of  your hair is in a resting phase. After 3 to 4 months, the resting hair falls out  and new hair starts to grow in its place.  It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) hair loss. It's a serious concern.  Men, women and children — can experience hair loss; there is no discrimination.  It can be detrimental to self-confidence and self esteem for some.  And why not? Isn't a woman's hair deemed as her crowning glory? Didn't Sampson derive his strength from his hair?  And, didn't the Cowsills hit Top 10 with their famous song "Hair" back in '68? Think about it, it's one of the first  things you notice about a person. If they are groomed right, how their hairstyle looks, and on and on.   Hair is an important subject.

Although baldness is "in" right now, and some men choose to shave their heads; not everyone is comfortable being bald, and not everyone has a choice. Genes play an important role – the thinness or lack of  hair can be genetics. Check to see if there are any relatives who are bald on your maternal side,  If there are, there is a greater chance that you may lose your hair as well.

Sometimes, medical or beauty treatments can be the culprit.  Certain medications such as drugs used for cancer, depression, arthritis or heart problems  may cause hair loss.  Certain hairstyles such as straightening, braiding or over perming  can cause damage to your hair and scalp.  Simply pulling that retro pony tail with an elastic rubber band can pull out your hair.  The quick fix for this is to simply use preventative measures: Stop embracing the culprits causing the problem.

Some people prefer to let their baldness run its course untreated and then unhidden. Some men do the "comb over,"  Others may cover it up with hairstyles, wigs, makeup, hats or scarves; and sometimes the spray on flocking.  Others choose medications such as Rogain, Minoxidil  Propecia®; or perhaps Herbal medications, shampoos and lotions. If you cannot prevent your hair loss with over the counter or logical preventative measures you might want to consider hair restoration through surgery.

Be sure to check out whoever you may decide to go to.  Make sure they are Board Certified, licensed, clean, sanitary and OSHA compliant. If you are out on the West Coast, Portland, Oregon Hair Transplants is OSHA compliant; they use  cutting edge technology including binocular microscopes, customized
instrumentation, and meticulous surgical techniques to ensure the best possible maximum growth and positive results. Portland, Oregon Hair Transplants also offers eyelash and eyebrow transplants which is where their artistry comes in.

If you want more information or advice, check out  The American Hair Loss Association as well.  Get yourself educated. They are committed to educating and improving the lives of all those affected by hair
loss.  Their  goal to create public awareness of this "devastating disease of the spirit," and to legitimize hair loss of all forms in the eyes of the medical community, the media and society as a whole.

Dress to the Nines ... the Dita Von Teese Way

Who wouldn't want to dress like the gorgeous and always fashionable Dita Von Teese ?  Not know who she is?  Where have you been?  Dita is a famous burlesque and pinup star. She says that her greatest sources of inspiration are films, art and still photographs from the 1930s to the early 1950s.

Some easy ways to be inspired by Dita's fashion sense and feminism is to:
  • Find a love  relationship with corsets. Dita is known for her love of  these fabulous undergarments and is often seen in clothing that enhances her hourglass figure. Dita says that comfort is based on quality rather than severity and a corset made to measurements by an expert makes all the difference in the world.  Listen to her : )
  • Get a nice vintage cinched waist jacket and a high waist skirt.
  • Wear old or new vintage reproductions to have the look of the 1940s but still have modern comfort. A great example is the the Kiera Reproduction dress in our Get Go Retro Shop!  Classy, stylish and feminine.
  • Always have your best face forward with well applied makeup (red lipstick is always good) and have your hair done in the forties style.
  • Heels, Heels and Heels.
  • Stockings ... seamed are nice.
  • Relax in a robe and slippers. The more feminine the better.
  • Dress yourself in the kind of clothing she's comfortable in. She wears skirts and dresses with heels. She also likes well-tailored, wide-leg trousers.
  • Don't think it's hard to dress this way ... it's about style, it's about being you and it's a lifestyle.

Anti Aging Wrinkle Cream Giveaway! Not Your Granny's Cold Cream!

According to Mark Twain:  "Age is an issue of mind over matter.  If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."  Well honey, I mind and it matters!

"Wrinkled, sagging skin is not the inevitable result of growing older. It is a disease and you can fight it.You can look your best, feel your best, and enjoy beautiful skin and optimal health every day of your life."      - Dr. Perricone

I know the name:  Perricone.  And, I like the quote above.  He looks like he walks the talk himself.  Sounds reasonable.  I'm not necessarily anxious to let my face show that I've earned every wrinkle I've got....And, since Steve Miller says that "Time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking into the future . . ." I'd like to keep what I've got going right now as long as I can, thank you very much.

Since all skin is not created equal, that means everyone requires a different regiment of skincare and ingredients to look and feel great.  Enter Dr Perricone MD, who has developed a revolutionary delivery system for skin care products.  With 5 years of research under his belt, Perricone  has created an anti aging wrinkle cream; that works by using biochemical individuality. This simply mans that the Perricone products allow skin to utilize the ingredients in Cold Plasma according to the individuals needs. Cold Plasma delivers optimal nutrition to skin cells with patented, proprietary and proven anti-aging ingredients. Because of its exceptional ability to deliver the benefits of these ingredients to skin, Perricone's anti aging wrinkle creamhelps correct the 10 most visible signs of aging:
  • Wrinkles
  • Loss of smoothness
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dryness
  • Redness
  • Loss of radiance
  • Discoloration
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Impurities
  • Loss of firmness
In conjunction with the Perricone aging cream, don't forget your eyes!   I strongly suggest you use the best anti wrinkle eye cream on the market today (in my opinion.)  Aging and wrinkles around the eyes can make you look old and tired.  Aging and heredity are the most common culprits that affect your eyes, and are out of your control.  But outside influences also affect them: Alcohol, puffiness, sun exposure (not using protection), lack of vitamins, smoking, caffeine and even alcohol.  Try a few thing ...the anti wrinkle eye cream; get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, take vitamins and moisturize daily.  Dr. Perricone can't do it
all!

Prices for the Perricone MD products range from $50 to almost $500.  But hey, what cost is beauty?  Does Perricone MD Have a Guarantee?   Of course.  Yes, there is a 30 day money back guarantee on the Perricone MD products.

It all boils down to this ....If you've ever tried some of the anti aging wrinkle creams on the market today and haven't see much change, don't you think  it’s time to try an anti aging wrinkle cream with results proven by
years of scientific research? It only makes sense... right?
